The Marcellus Hartman Collection consists of over 300 Super 8 films made by Hartman, a Texan, while serving in the military in Vietnam in the early 1970s. The films document everyday life on his base, capturing the comings and goings of soldiers and others who worked on the base, helicopters arriving and taking off, and images of the surrounding landscape from Hartman’s visits to cities and other military locations in Vietnam. This film captures scenes of soldiers’ arrival in Vietnam, with overhead footage shot from the plane. It also features a look around the Freedom Hill camp, from the military barracks to Vietnamese tenement housing to the Pacific Stars and Stripes Bookstore.
