The Marcellus Hartman Collection consists of over 300 Super 8 films made by Hartman, a Texan, while serving in the military in Vietnam in the early 1970s. The films document everyday life on his base, capturing the comings and goings of soldiers and others who worked on the base, helicopters arriving and taking off, and images of the surrounding landscape from Hartman’s visits to cities and other military locations in Vietnam. This film captures scenes of American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians gathering around a portable water trailer. Later, a soldier holds up a newspaper to the camera, showing off an article about the 1971 meeting between President Richard Nixon and Emperor Hirohito of Japan in Anchorage, Alaska.
