The Marcellus Hartman Collection consists of over 300 Super 8 films made by Hartman, a Texan, while serving in the military in Vietnam in the early 1970s. The films document everyday life on his base, capturing the comings and goings of soldiers and others who worked on the base, helicopters arriving and taking off, and images of the surrounding landscape from Hartman’s visits to cities and other military locations in Vietnam. This film from January 1978 captures scenes of Hartman’s home life in Austin, as a woman and child visit the Wheatsville Food Co-op. Established in 1976, the grocery store remains the only retail food cooperative in Texas. Later, the family goes on a hike.
