This amateur film, made by a young Robert Frye, is titled “Too Frightening”. A piece of slapstick silent cinema, the film presents the odyssey of Chester, a young man desperate to get ahead, who is continually comically thwarted in his quest by circumstance and the cruelty of other people. When Chester’s mother tells him that he must find a job, he leaves the safety of his family and tries to make good, yet the world has other plans for him. Chester dazzles a street gang with his coin flipping prowess, tries to get by on what he has in the bank, desperately tries to find success as a one man band, and attempts to find fortune selling copies of the news weekly, “Grit”. Chester is continually defeated: he is taken hostage by bank robbers, presented with a stick of lit dynamite, and is forced to eat his copies of Grit (at least he had mustard on hand). See how Chester fares in Part II!
