In this segment, taped for KDFW’s “Eyewitness News,” Dallas-based reporter Jim Ruddy provides an update on a possible swine flu vaccination awaiting federal approval in the summer of 1976. Also featured in this footage is an interview with Dr. Allen Fain, the Dallas County Health Director at the time. Prompted by a minor outbreak of H1N1 influenza in January 1976, the vaccine would eventually be distributed in October of that same year. Though the federal government would suspend the immunization program just a few months later, in total, over 40 million Americans received the vaccine during what has become known as the “swine flu fiasco.”
