This silent news footage captures scenes of the Miss Wool of America Pageant in 1970, from the contestants’ arrival in San Angelo, through rehearsals, to the crowning of Miss Wool, Gail “Gus” Heinzmann of Illinois. The Miss Wool of America Pageant took place annually from 1952-1972 in San Angelo, sponsored by the National Wool Growers Association, the American Sheep Producers Council, and the Wool Bureau, Inc. Miss Wool represented the wool industry nationally, touring the country in the latest woolen fashions. The 1970 pageant was hosted by pop singer Jack Jones and folk singer Nancy Ames, and movie star Glenn Ford acted as one of judges. Then-Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes was on hand to welcome the contestants to the state of Texas.
