This home movie, filmed by Edward Schwartz, documents several meetings of the Surprise Club in El Paso in 1956 and 1958. Included are the Surprise Club “Come as You Are Party,” February 1956; Surprise Club, 1956; Surprise Club “Do It Yourself Dinner,” November 1956; and Surprise Club “Nite in Vegas,” 1958. These were adult parties featuring drinking, smoking, and parlor games. The Come as You Are Party required guests to arrive attired as they were when they received the invitation. Thus, many participants attended wearing underclothes, pajamas, or bathrobes. The June 1956 party included a kissing game, in which men were blindfolded and tried to identify women by kissing them. The Do It Yourself Dinner involved a live turkey.
