This educational film looks at the legacy of Manuel María de Salcedo, governor of Spanish Texas from 1808-1813. In 1812, during the Mexican War of Independence, a rebel coalition known as the Gutiérrez–Magee Expedition began an invasion of Spanish Texas, capturing Nacogdoches and Presidio La Bahia, or Goliad. In preparation for the revolutionaries’ arrival at San Antonio, then the capital of Texas, Salcedo buried the city’s gold. Shortly thereafter, the rebel forces surrounded San Antonio, and Salcedo surrendered. More than a century later, archeologists and treasure hunters are still looking for the buried gold of San Antonio.
