This home movie captures scenes of home and work life for the Hayward family in Canyon. Scenes include the family’s farm, focusing on their tractors and farm equipment, then the Haywards’ son hilariously gets into his mom’s lipstick. Noteworthy scenes of a team drilling for water on the farm fields and a man divining for groundwater are also included. Water divination, or dowsing, is a practice that began in the 15th century that was used to find water, minerals, metals, or, more recently, petroleum. As seen in this film, a Y-shaped divining rod is held as the diviner walks over target areas. If the resource is present underground, the divining rod is believed to “twitch” or dip in the diviner’s hands. Watch this film to see if the Hayward family diviner had any luck!
