This special feature for Beaumont’s KFDM-TV tells the story of the Spindletop oil discovery in the early 1900s. The piece begins with the background of wildcatter Pattillo Higgins, who eventually crossed paths with Anthony Lucas, the man for which the Lucas Gusher at the Spindletop oil field were ultimately named. The discovery transformed Beaumont into a boomtown well into the 1920s, when additional oil was unearthed by Frank Yount in the flanks of Spindletop. The two booms accounted for a total of 140 million barrels of oil.
