View of Austin from the observation deck of the UT Tower, formally known as Main Building
The observation deck was closed to the public from August 1966 to 1968 following the Tower shooting. Sniper Charles Whitman opened fire from the observation deck on August 1, 1966, killing 14 people and injuring more than 30 others. His rampage ended after 96 minutes, when law enforcement reached Whitman and shot him dead.

This 1966 home movie captures the Gray family on vacation around Texas. Following a visit to Dallas, the family hops on a plane in Love Field to fly to Austin. In the state capital, the Grays first tour (a completely empty) Barton Springs, Congress Avenue, and Bergstorm Air Force Base. Next, they head to the University of Texas at Austin campus, where they look out over the city from the observation deck of the UT Tower. (The observation deck would be closed to the public only months later following the Charles Whitman shooting.) The Grays conclude their excursion with a trip to Camp Mabry, which now also houses the Texas Military Force Museum.
