The Houston Police Department created its Community Relations Division in 1967 following a violent confrontation between police and Texas Southern University students in May of that year. To relieve racial tensions between law enforcement and the communities it served, the division brought together small groups of police officers and minority leaders for discussions. This news segment for Houston’s KPRC-TV captures such a meeting on July 13, 1968. Held at a YMCA located nextdoor to the Texas Southern University campus, the meeting most likely saw many TSU students in attendance. The footage appears silent and would have been voiced over by the anchorperson during a live broadcast.
