This news segment for Houston’s KPRC-TV investigates the accidental death of two laborers during the construction of the AstroWorld amusement park. In the segment, an unidentified man, possibly a building project manager, describes what happened. On May 23, 1968, construction crews were readying a three-ton boat for use in the park. As workers installed guidance equipment to the hull, the vessel slid from its rigging and fell to the ground. Two men were fatally crushed: Thomas Jarrell and William Jarrell. The men were brothers from the Houston suburb of Pasadena. Their widows filed a $750,000 damage suit against AstroWorld and General Steel Erection Company. AstroWorld opened on June 1, 1968, as part of the Astrodomain, a development complex owned by former Houston Mayor Roy Hofheinz. Six Flags bought the park in 1975, operating it until its closure in 2005.
