In this 1991 home video, elementary school children perform a musical about nutrition for their parents and classmates. The story begins when four kids find themselves locked inside a grocery store. While first excited by the chance to gorge themselves on junk food, the children soon find themselves in the midst of a fight between the “Basic Four” food groups: dairy, fruits and vegetables, protein, and breads and cereals. Children dressed as examples from each food group explain (in rhyme) their dietary importance before the chorus breaks into song. The US Department of Agriculture recommended a diet based on its “Basic Four” nutrition guide from 1956 to 1992, when the Food Guide Pyramid was introduced.
