"Mildred Didrikson, ‘Wonder Girl' of athletics, gives a vivid indication of her mastery of the links games but is denied participation in amateur matches by the United States Golf Association." [From original Universal Newsreel content sheet] This Universal Newsreel footage features Mildred “Babe” Didrikson Zaharias (a Port Arthur native) showing off her golfing talents. She began playing golf in 1935, and although she had only been playing a short time, she was denied amateur status and barred from competing in amateur matches. She responded by competing in the Los Angeles Open, a men’s PGA tournament, in 1938, something no woman had yet attempted. Now a golf celebrity, Babe Zaharias has been recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as one of the most versatile female competitors.
