"Spotting a desperate band of law-breakers, crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico, a squad of the frontier defense service prepares to outwit the outlaws...These thrilling authentic pictures reveal the constant fight between gunmen and the forces of law and order." [From original Universal Newsreel content sheet] The United States Border Patrol was established in 1924 as part of the Immigration Bureau under the Department of Labor. The agency began in El Paso, one of the most active border regions in the U.S. During Prohibition in the 1930s, the primary focus of the border patrol was the prevention of smuggling of goods across the U.S.-Mexico border. This Universal Newsreel dramatically depicts the border patrol in action as they stake out and capture a band of would-be smugglers as they cross the Rio Grande River near El Paso.
