Mystery Video: May 2014

This month’s Mystery Video comes from the Gordon Wilkison Collection and features the historic Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. The Driskill was built in 1886 and today is the oldest operating hotel in Austin. It has served as the go-to bar and dining locale for Texas cattlemen, the venue for many Texas governor’s inaugural balls, and for nine years in the ‘50s and '60s, was home to Lyndon B. and Lady Bird Johnson’s television news station, KTBC. In this footage, we see a large barbecue dinner, complete with checkered tablecloths, served in the Driskill’s dining room. The dinner features a cowboy hat-clad emcee and after-dinner musical entertainment in the form of an all-female string band in drag. Do you recognize this event or any of its attendees? Who is the emcee of the event? Do you remember this comedic string band? Help us figure out what is happening at the historic Driskill Hotel!
