New Releases: April 2019

Journey back in time with these new additions from the Tyrrell Historical Library Collection!

PM Magazine, also known as Evening Magazine, was a local weeknight news and entertainment television series broadcast on multiple stations across the United States from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Combining both local and syndicated segments, common story subjects included community members and events, lifestyle and consumer tips, and human-interest pieces.

The Tyrrell Historical Library Collection encompasses hundreds of PM Magazine segments broadcast on Beaumont’s KFDM-TV between 1979 and 1985. Visitors to the Texas Archive website can now explore 125 videos, including nine complete episodes. Here are a few of our favorites:

Leeza Gibbons on the set of the hit series, Dallas. Gibbons was one of the program’s original co-hosts. She went on to become a correspondent and co-host for Entertainment Tonight and host of her own daytime talk show, Leeza.

John Walls profiles Bum Phillips, then head coach of the Houston Oilers. (For more Oilers content, check out this interview with the woman responsible for feeding the team during spring training.)

Anna Chavez tours the Little Creamery in Brenham and tastes Blue Bell’s newest flavor: cookies ‘n’ cream.

Frank Kerr explores the growing popularity of video games and advances in consumer technology. Video games and computers in the home? The hell you say!

Spend a moment exploring the collection and you will also find line dancing at Gilley’s Club, traditions of the Texas A&M Yell Leaders, Gibbons dressed as Queen Jane Seymour, Nolan Ryan judging the World’s Championship Bar-B-Q Contest, an interview with an incognito armadillo, a feature on new wave fashion, East Texas urban legends, toddlers dressed as Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the Tupperware spirit song, and much, much more.

Watch these segments and more now, and stay tuned as we add more videos from the Tyrrell Historical Library Collection in the future!
